public space
Aspazija - feminist, artist and politician - is characterised by strength and passion. Rapidly transcending the roles offered by the times in both society and domestic life, and captivating future generations of women, she dared to be direct and demanding. The literary characters she conceived bravely reveal themselves, they love and they die for passion. This happens in a true, exalted and glorious way.
Art in honour of Aspazija
The object shaped in a contemporary and recognisable pop culture language instantly draw the viewer into a game of passion and romance, where the main prize – love – will be won by the one who dares. Or not.
Melting Heart is for those who have heated up their feelings to melting point. It embodies tenderness, passion, affection and unconditional love - the whole spectrum of love feelings that Aspazija encompassed in her very different works.
The flame is the lantern above the heads of romantic lovers hidden in the darkest hours under the cover of trees in the very centre of the city. It is small, intimate and subdued, but at the same time it hides strength and restlessness.
The tattoo of a thorny rose, carved sharply into the square, reminds us of Aspazija's rebellious spirit and of the courage needed by anyone who strives to obtain what they want fully and completely.
Spatial concept of the square
Theatre square is one of the notches in the fabric of the city along the outer edge of the Old Town, which invite people from the wide 19th century boulevards into the twisting medieval streets. In addition, the adjacent public transport and tourist bus stops are a particular feature of the site, making the Theatre square quite an important infrastructure hub.
Theatre square is hardly a destination, but rather a stopover on the way from one place to another. A break for a coffee before the opera, a place to rest after a walk in the Old Town, a refreshment on a sultry summer day or a spot to arrange a meeting.
The square is conceived as a single space, without abrupt changes of level or boundary elements. Art objects, landscaping, café tables, benches, bike racks are freely, even seemingly randomly, arranged. The paving is designed in zones of different textures, as well as gentle changes in level.
